I bought my first “proper” camera in 1969, a Yashica YK 35mm rangefinder, in a second hand shop in Yokohama Japan, it cost £6, and for a sixteen-year-old cabin boy on an old tramp steamer, was a whole weeks pay! I progressed to an SLR with a Zenith E, which I bought off a Spanish street trader at Las Palmas in 1971. I think it fell off the back of a Russian cruise liner. I still have the 40-year-old Yashica.

I first became interested in landscape photography in the mid 70’s. Two cameras were essential in the days of film, so one could be used for monochrome and transparency in the other. I had my own darkroom for over 25 years and I still have over 7,000 negatives.

My interest in low light photography stems from the incredible light that we have on the Llyn peninsula. I’m an early bird, and like to be out and about at least an hour before dawn. It can take me several trips to a location to get the ideal conditions and light, so finding the right location, and when is the best time to be there is a must, planning is all-important, and patience an essential virtue. The light can change so rapidaly half an hour either side of dawn, and normally after only a few minutes into the day, it’s all gone. So that’s why I have very few daylight images in my portfolio. And no mater how much you invest in lenses, there is no substatute for a good solid tripod, it’s the most important bit of kit that a photographer has.
