Paintings by Jaqueline Alkema
"My paintings are the product of an intellectual thought process leading to a visualisation of an inner state. The imagination triggered by reading, research or working from life, is the starting point for any piece of work. The female figure with at times awkward poses is a predominant feature in my work. Paintings develop through experimentation and intuition but with an awareness and control of the media used.
Mostly working in oil and mixed media I often use painting techniques and layering of materials to create a physical and emotional depth. The use of collage is something I frequently return to in my work.
In 2003 I began a series of portraits. The reading of biographies and the research of archive material inspired me to tell the stories of women who, through personal suffering and difficulties, still achieved their creative and political potential.
The portraits are black and white for a starker, more dramatic impact, reminiscent of silent film and early cinema I completed an ACW funded project in 2005 in which I investigated a form of portraiture demonstrating hidden aspects of women’s lives in a combination of storytelling, text and painting.
This particular project concentrated on the lives of women active during the 1985/86 miner’s strike in South Wales. It was my desire to give these women the iconic status they deserved and to arouse curiosity in the viewer."
