Prints by Elaine Jeffreys
Born in Newport, Gwent Elaine moved to Edinburgh and then to Aberdeen where she had her early education. In Scotland she learned to love the rugged landscape. Still precious to her are the memories of picking bilberries on the mountains and collecting multicoloured limpet shells in the rock pools at Stonehaven. Moving to Folkestone where she continued her education, the mountains were replaced by the chalk and the gault clay cliffs, both rich for fossil hunting, but once again the sea, boats and beaches were on the doorstep.
After receiving her teaching qualification at Worcester she taught in the southeast of England, Birmingham and North Kent before returning to Wales to teach in 1970.
Over the years she explored various aspects of two and three dimensional art and in 1976 she and her husband set up a pottery in Wrexham producing hand thrown, raw fuel fired stoneware. Examples of their work are in collections worldwide. Since retiring from teaching she has concentrated on painting and is fascinated by the challenges of traditional watercolour. She now lives in North Wales and works from her home
studio on a headland on the beautiful Lleyn Peninsula. Her special interest lies in the atmospheric portrayal of seascapes and landscapes but her work also includes architectural subjects and portraiture. She frequently features figures in her landscapes and her studies of children absorbed in activities on the seashore reflect her own childhood experiences.
In the last ten years her work has been extensively collected not only in the UK but also in Canada, the USA, Australia and New Zealand.
